Built in the 1970s on former JHC land, Orchard House continues to offer a ‘home from home’ to residents whist involving their families and friends. Similarly, Bircham House, named after a former JHC Chair and local vicar, was developed in 2003 with 28 purpose built, accessible flats.
The income from sales enabled JHC to build and run its John’s Acre almshouses, remembering our benefactor John Huntingdon.
Today the charity encourages local people of all ages to make use of its advice and support services, whether about a general issue or a specific concern such as the latest legislation on pensions.
Other dedicated support for the elderly includes our collaboration with the Social Navigators at Granta Medical Practice as well as Occupational Therapists, Sawston Time Bank and Age UK’s mobile warden. In some cases we can provide funding for the Age UK warden to people on low incomes.
JHC’s grants are available to local support groups which may be especially important as they open up after lockdown. For example, in the past we have supported ‘Sing to remember’ and the Senior Citizens’ Club.
